Descrizione

Elemento caratteristico della specie è il dimorfismo sessuale: la femmina può raggiungere i 20 cm di lunghezza, mentre il maschio non supera il centimetro. La femmina secerne, durante il periodo fertile, una ooteca calcarea, simile ad una conchiglia, con pareti molto sottili, in cui depone le uova fecondate.

Diffusione

Cosmopolita, acque tropicali e sub-tropicali. Ne è stata descritta una specie mediterranea Argonauta argo ssp. mediterranea Monterosato, 1914, oggi considerata non valida.
